Matthew 10:40-42, Jeremiah 28:5-9
“Matthew’s Messiah”
This Communion Sunday, we spend a bit more time this week with the words of Jeremiah and continue to consider how the prophets of the Hebrew Bible influenced Matthew. Of all our Gospel writers, Matthew works most intentionally to tie the stories of Jesus into the larger Jewish tradition and the Hebrew Bible.
As we look towards July 4th, it’s helpful to remember the prophets were all wrestling with ideas of liberty, fidelity, and identity. Their visions were intimately tied to national identity and transcended the politics of their day.
