John 17:6-19
“Made Whole and Complete”

Our readings this Easter season have guided us through an exploration of who, exactly, is Jesus Christ. Tomorrow, Mother’s Day, is our final Sunday before Pentecost.

Our Eastertide readings have given us a Christ who:
– survives the obliteration of rational hope,
– has suffered wounds that change identity,
– is made of flesh and bone but capable of transcendence,
– is a good shepherd, calling us to hear his voice as one flock– though we stand among different folds,
– who abides in us, with us always, rooting us so that we may branch out and bear fruit, and
– lives grounded in caring for His community and being cared for by His community– a circle of mutual, self-sacrificial love.

This Sunday, we read of Jesus’ hope for his followers, recalling His prayer before his arrest, “I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy made complete in themselves.”
