John 6:56-69

“Eat This Bread”

“Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me and I in them… the one who eats this bread will live forever.”

When many of his disciples heard it, they said,
“This teaching is difficult; who can accept it?”

Because of this many of his disciples turned back and no longer went about with him. So Jesus asked the twelve,
“Do you also wish to go away?”

Simon Peter answered him,
“Lord, to whom can we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

This week, we complete our study of chapter six of the Gospel of John. Jesus invites his followers to be sustained by God’s inexhaustible care and nourishment. In a world of scarcity, belief in this reality is difficult. Simon lays out the crux of the problem for students of Jesus: even if the teaching is too fantastical to fully accept, the deeper wisdom of His words are those of eternal life. Where shall we go, if not the path of Christ? What shall we eat, if not the Bread of Life?
