Job 22:1, 22-23, 27, 23:1-9, 16-17
Vanish Into Darkness

“Then Eliphaz the Temanite [said]:…
If you return to the Almighty, you will be restored…
You will pray to him, and he will hear you,
and you will pay your vows.”

Job answered:…
“If I go forward, he is not there;
or backward, I cannot perceive him;
on the left he hides, and I cannot behold him;
I turn to the right, but I cannot see him.
God has made my heart faint;
the Almighty has terrified me.
If only I could vanish in darkness,
and thick darkness would cover my face!”

Sometimes, we are alone in our suffering. Sometimes, like Job, we wish we could vanish into darkness. Job is only halfway through his troubles, and the critiques of his “friends” do not stop! How do we continue to live faithfully when we no longer believe God is there? How do we continue to live faithfully without faith?
