John 20:19-31
“Doubt”
After the crucifixion, Christ Jesus returns, again and again, to the upper room, revealing himself to his closest students. Jesus could have met them in the market or on a walk, but Christ chooses to meet them in their fear, locked together in the upper room.
For Thomas, the marks of injury confirm the authenticity of Christ. He could not trust the possibility of transcendence without evidence of suffering. Jesus’ body has not been magically healed, but Christ now carries these wounds in a new way. The wounds no longer hurt. The marks in his hands tell the story of who He is and what He has survived.
“Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!'”
