Matt 2:1-12
“By Another Road”
This Epiphany Sunday, we celebrate the Epiphany, the day that marks the arrival of the Magi at the home of young Jesus. King Herod had been rather frightened to learn of the birth of a new leader when these wise men of the East stopped by to say hello on their way to Bethlehem. The Magi had been following a star a long way. They were probably exhausted when they finally found Jesus. But, because they were warned in a dream, they took the long way back home, avoiding Herod.
Epiphany begins the Christian season of Epiphany that will take us to Lent. During the next four weeks at Trinity, we will explore the Christian journey- a circuitous, unexpected journey home in which we are awakened, truly seen, take on new work, learn that the Kindom of God is not what we expect at all, and begin to sense the enormity of our task. We are on the journey of a lifetime. We will lean into the Gospel of Matthew, exploring in miniature the broad themes of the unexpected road home.
