John 12:13-22
“Business End”
Most of us think of Jesus as a loving presence who excluded no one and nothing from his care. This isn’t true. He wasn’t open to all things. Our Bible stories paint Jesus as a person of conviction who held the line on nonsense. Jesus included many who were excluded from his society because of his solid self-identity and moral code. He called out many others who were included by society because of that same inner compass. Being legal and common does not make an action right.
Our Sunday scripture features Jesus taking a whip into the temple, driving out merchants, and flipping over the tables of predatory bankers. We are in Lent, a season of rethinking our choices and behaviors. Sunday we will dwell for a bit on the healthy function of anger at injustice. Becoming justifiably angry is sometimes the motivation we need to rethink how we have always done things and make some changes.
