John 18:33-37

“You Say So”

In the final reading of the Christian year, Jesus stands before Pilate. He appears to be a nobody, yet some say he claims to be a king. He appears to disagree with the charges, yet affirms that some follow him. Is Jesus saying he is a spiritual king in a world beyond ours? Is Jesus saying that this world is already seeded with citizens of the kingdom of Christ longing for the truth? His words can be understood in different ways. Taken together with our previous two readings from the Gospel of Mark, we are left wondering if these scenes are ones of finality and destruction or merely the beginning of something grander that cannot be put into words.
