Isaiah 53:4-12
“Out of Anguish, Into Light”
“Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him with pain. When you make his life an offering for sin, he shall see his offspring, and shall prolong his days; through him the will of the Lord shall prosper. Out of his anguish he shall see light; he shall find satisfaction through his knowledge.”
There is no nobility in unjust suffering, but should we find ourselves bearing undeserved pain, we are in good company. This week’s guest preacher will share the pastor’s thoughts on these words of Isaiah, which Christians often read as pointing to Christ. But Isaiah, in chapter 53, had lived through the exile in Babylon and knew Job’s story. He may have lived hundreds of years before Jesus, but he saw that out of unremitting anguish, a new light can be born. What if the only answer to unjust suffering is a transformation that reconfigures our faith?
