John 15:9-17
“Love One Another”
An empty room can be so many things: a workshop, a bedroom, or perhaps a study. It’s hard to see the many possibilities in a room full of furniture. Emptiness reminds us of the potentials that were always present.
Our readings this Easter season guide us through an exploration of who, exactly, is Jesus Christ. Here, on the sixth Sunday of the Easter Season, we meet the Jesus of self-sacrificial love. In John 15:9-17, Jesus describes his self-sacrificial emptying out as the very fullness of love. He invites the disciples to become more than students but to become friends who walk the same path. They are to empty themselves out for each other in love. We, too, are encouraged to join the journey. How will we empty ourselves in love so that we may experience space for new possibilities in Christ?
