Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23

“Forest & Trees”

Join us this Communion Sunday as we begin a new sermon series, “Both And.” We are following the teachings of Jesus as relayed by chapters 7-9 of the Gospel of Mark. It is an ever-true observation that we often miss the larger point when we focus on little stuff. We miss the forest for the trees.

In today’s passage from Mark, some well-meaning religious people have centered their lives around forms of religious piety so that they may live aligned with God’s will. True piety runs deeper. Many become so focused on the forms, they miss that true piety lives in the heart. We are revealed in our character. If we wish to know we live in the forest of God’s love, we must not spend our days comparing our tree to a template of what a tree should be, but sink our roots into the forest floor.
